I am an antique ... By: dedosdigital. on 28 Jun 09, 03:33:14 I am an antique restorer and luthier ; having respect for
traditional methods , I was opposed to the following method of filling , but it works well in many applications :
Wood sanded to 320/280 . 6,12, or 24 hr epoxy squeegeed into the wood in direction of grain . Srape off all possible epoxy . Use credit card/smooth plastic scraper . Rough sand between coats . Repeat untill filled flat . Final coat may be of epoxy alcohol 50/50
applied thin w/clean cloth . .
ZPOXY , Pacer Tech is good .
Try using a credit ... By: tuningpin. on 13 Oct 08, 17:04:08 Try using a credit card or putty knife type straight edge to squeegie it into the pores. They say to go across the grain but I always go with when putting in to avoid lap marks. After it sets up use burlap across the grain to get the residue off and then sand it smooth the next day. Always fill and sand prior to any staining or finishing to get a nice clear color. If you fill after it looks milky in the pores.

By: djmiller1948. on 21 Mar 09, 20:58:30 I found a product to remove the old finish and never raise the grain so you can put a new finish or stain the wood and then put a new finish on. Its The Victorian House Wood Refinisher. Its on the web. I have used it on antiques for years because it won't loosen glues or veneers. I order it on the web. They have products for wood and metal restoration made in Oklahoma. If you need to remove a finish it works so much easier than stripping. The products are all excellent. Dj

The orbital is ... By: 8digitPDX. on 20 Aug 10, 13:17:24 The orbital is definitely the safer way to go. Lose concentration on a drum sander for just a second and it will gouge the floor. Drum sanders are older technology and go cheap on the used tool market now, but they are good for doing larger industrial floors in a hurry or ripping down a thick finish. You also have to change discs in the orbital more often then drums in a drum sander, but it is fast and easy to change discs in the orbital. Figure $6 to $10 every time you swap them out.

@supermodel34512 ... By: shorecat99. on 28 Feb 10, 04:11:05 @supermodel34512 The waterbased finish raises the grain of the wood slightly and some dust settles so the sanding removes this and gives the next coat a little better bite. A light sanding is usually needed after the first coat on most finishes but after that it varies with the type of finish. Gotta read the label for what you're going to use. I only used one or two of each of 3 grits on the sandpaper. If you don't hit nails, it lasts. Emptying the rooms was a day. Sanding was a day and finishing was done slowly over 2 days. I let it harden a couple more days before putting furniture back (also painted). I used a waterbased finish. Oil based is nice too - less coats but needs ventilation. If that's no problem, you may like that better.
